In 2007, the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) issued a Special Order of Consent (SOC) with the
state of North Carolina regarding a series of sanitary sewer overflows that
occurred in the city of Wilmington. That SOC led to several challenging pipe
bursting projects facilitated by trenchless contractorKRG Utility Inc.,
Lenoir, N.C.
Since
that time, the management of the wastewater treatment systems in the City of
Wilmington and New Hanover County has been taken over by the Cape Fear Public
Utility Authority (CFPUA). The CFPUA, now responsible for those sewer systems,
entered into a consent decree with the U.S. EPA in 2013, resolving the claims
by the EPA regarding overflows in the City of Wilmington and New Hanover
County’s systems.
